Fentanyl belongs to the group of opioids and is used as a fast-acting painkiller in particularly severe cases. However, fentanyl and its derivatives are also flooding drug markets. For example, carfentanyl – a substance that is actually intended to stun elephants – is appearing more and more frequently in the drug scene. It is often sold as heroin, or even blended with it. To produce 10,000 single doses of carfentanil, 0.1 grams of the substance is sufficient. Thus, it is practically undosable and very likely also responsible for the worrying increase in the trend of drug-related deaths worldwide.
